Drug & Alcohol Detoxification

Withdrawal can begin just hours after your last use. These symptoms begin mild, but they quickly become uncomfortable, painful, and dangerous. Not everyone will experience the same symptoms or severity of symptoms. Even so, most withdrawal symptoms follow the same process and timeline.

That being said, the detox process differs based on the substance you are detoxing from. Alcohol and drug detoxing is completely different, as are the detox timelines between individual drug types. Here is a look at detox symptoms and timelines based on substance.

Withdrawal symptoms can begin as soon as six hours after you stop drinking. Most often, it is only mild symptoms that you experience during the first six hours. You can experience some of the following symptoms during this time:

  • Anxiety
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Insomnia
  • Sweating
  • Shaky hands

Symptoms will get more severe once you hit the 12 to 48-hour mark. Hallucinations normally begin 12 to 24 hours after you stopped drinking. You can also experience seizures within the first two days after you stop drinking. During the 48 to 72-hour period, your symptoms will shift again. You are likely to experience delirium tremens, vivid hallucinations, and delusions. More commonly experienced symptoms during this time include:

  • Confusion
  • Increased heart rate
  • High blood pressure
  • Sweating
  • Fever

Once it has been more than 72 hours after your last drink, the symptoms will begin to subside.

Tracing the timeline of drug detox is not as simple. The specific type of drug you are detoxing from will largely determine the timeline, though the symptoms are generally the same.

Short-acting opioids, like heroin and some prescription painkillers, often cause withdrawals that last between 4 to 10 days but the symptoms start within 8 hours after your last use. Longer-acting opioids, such as methadone, cause withdrawal symptoms for up to 10 days, but the symptoms don’t begin until 2 to 4 days after the last use.

Benzodiazepines often have the most severe detox timeline. Withdrawal often begins 1 to 4 days after the last use, but it peaks in severity during the first two weeks after your last use. Withdrawal can be troublesome for months and even years if you do not receive proper treatment.

The most common symptoms of drug withdrawal include:

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Bone pain
  • Muscle pain
  • High temperature
  • Fatigue
  • Restlessness
  • Headaches
  • Sweating
  • Heart palpitations
  • Shaking

How We Heal

What to Expect When Entering a Drug & Alcohol Detox in Southern California

When you first arrive at the detox location, an intake exam will determine what support you need. This exam may include blood work, a discussion with a doctor, and other tests to determine your physical and mental health. The goal of the intake exam is to figure out exactly what sort of help you will need during the detox process. Once you have taken the intake exam, you will be able to get detox support from a medical professional. Detox support often includes medications to minimize withdrawal symptoms and to care for any potential issues that come up along the way.

Once the detoxification process is over, the detox center will help you get into a treatment facility so that you can learn to break your addiction, and you never have to go through this detox process again. Many detox centers work directly with treatment centers or are treatment centers themselves so that patients can get comprehensive care from the same location.

Can't I Just Detox At Home? Why You Shouldn't Detox Alone

The Dangers of Detoxification Alone

Many individuals decide to end their addiction and kickstart the detox process. It’s important that you should never detox alone because it is outright dangerous. Only by detoxing with a medical professional by your side can you detox safely and effectively.

During the detox process, your body is purging the substance. This purge leads to physical and psychological side effects that are not only painful but downright lethal. As a result, the majority of patients who try to detox on their own are unsuccessful. Because of how uncomfortable the symptoms are during the detox process, it is difficult for patients to continue the detox process. Instead, they may seek their substance of choice in order to make the withdrawal symptoms stop. Even in cases where the patient is able to resist their urges, the symptoms of withdrawal can be so serious that it leads to permanent disability or even death. To make detoxing alone an even worse idea, it is essential that you seek treatment right after the detox process, which is difficult when you are detoxing alone. If you do not seek treatment immediately, you may fall back into your same habits.

Because of how difficult the detox process is, you always want to undergo it with a medical professional. A medical professional will be there with you the entire time to make it as comfortable and efficient as possible. Physicians will be able to administer medications to diminish the withdrawal symptoms and ensure you are safe during the process. Most importantly, physicians will be able to recommend you to a treatment program after the withdrawal symptoms have subsided. The treatment plan offered by the physician is what will allow you to move past the detox phase and deeper into your journey of sobriety.
