Dual Diagnosis
Our Program
Bipolar disorder, sometimes called manic depression or manic depressive disorder, is characterized by dramatic mood swings, significant shifts in energy, and varying activity levels. The term “bipolar” refers to two extreme “poles” of the illness, namely mania and depression.
Although bipolar disorder is not one of the more common disorders in the United States, it is one that has serious repercussions. Although only 2.8% of adults will struggle with this disorder, about 83% of these individuals have a serious impairment. As such, bipolar disorder has the highest percentage of impairment of all mood disorders. This tells us that bipolar disorder is incredibly severe and needs to be treated accordingly.
Furthermore, individuals diagnosed with bipolar disorder are at high risk for developing substance abuse disorder as well. In fact, studies have shown that anywhere from 30% to 50% of individuals with bipolar one or two will develop some substance abuse disorder during their life.
Whenever an individual suffers from a mental illness, such as bipolar disorder, and substance abuse, they have what is called a dual diagnosis. Dual diagnosis treatment is different from other treatments because it takes into account all conditions. When dealing with bipolar disorder specifically, dual diagnosis treatment is designed to help treat bipolar disorder while also treating substance abuse.
Our Dual Diagnosis Program
Because bipolar disorder is such a serious condition, you should talk to a medical professional if you suspect you suffer from bipolar I or II. With bipolar disorder, individuals will experience major shifts in mood that alternate between mania and depression. There are different symptoms of bipolar disorder, depending on which pole you are experiencing.
Furthermore, there are two different types of mania in bipolar disorder, hypomania and mania. Hypomania normally only lasts 4 days and it is less severe than mania because it doesn’t always impair one’s ability to function. Mania is more severe and can lead to hospitalization.

Even though bipolar disorder has serious complications, individuals with this diagnosis can leave a full and happy life if they get proper treatment. Proper treatment is a lifelong process that begins with therapy that targets both bipolar disorder and co-occurring illnesses, such as substance abuse.
Bipolar treatment centers in Southern California are designed to address all needs of the patient. Bipolar treatment first and foremost deals with the bipolar condition. Doctors may perform evaluations to ensure that bipolar disorder truly is the diagnosis the patient is struggling with. From there, individual and group therapy sessions will allow you to dig deeper into the diagnosis, unlearn unhealthy coping mechanisms, and replace the unhealthy mechanisms with healthy ones.
Bipolar treatment centers also provide help for co-occurring illnesses, such as substance abuse. Because substance abuse and bipolar disorder often go hand in hand, bipolar treatment centers in Southern California are fully equipped to deal with both. When treating co-occurring disorders, patients will learn how their disorders interact with one another and learn how to identify triggers.
In addition to medical help concerning co-occurring illnesses, bipolar disorder treatment centers provide a stable environment that allows you to change your habits and life. While staying at these facilities, you will get a healthy diet, a consistent sleep schedule, and healthy routines that can help aid in your recovery.
Most importantly, bipolar treatment centers in Southern California provide you with a support group in order to stay motivated and to feel understood. Many individuals who suffer from dual diagnosis feel that they are misunderstood and without people who truly understand. When receiving help at these treatment centers, you’ll be surrounded by peers who are going through the same situation as you so you have a support group that fully understands.
More so, these treatment centers provide empathetic staff who also know what you are going through. By having staff members who have been in your place before, they can provide you with medical care in a way that you feel understood and supported from all fronts.
